A request to go to a property can involve many hours (sometimes days) of driving, flat tyres, and other challenges. Distance is measured in hours. We don't have a permanent presence in Mt Isa, as far as we are aware no-one does, but can arrange service.

Mt Isa has a population of approximately 18,500 people. To the West, near the Northern Territory border is Camooweal (189km, pop. approx. 310). To the East, about an hour and a half's drive is Cloncurry (119km, population 4828 [2001 census]). The Flinders Hwy joins Townsville and Mount Isa, with 'major' centres at Hughenden, Richmond, Julia Creek and Cloncurry.

Described as the 'Oasis of the Outback', by someone with a good imagination, Mount Isa nestles among the ochre-red Selwyn Ranges, on the banks of the Leichhardt River. Mount Isa has grown from strength to strength over the years but the harsh picturesque landscape has barely changed, becoming one of the main draw-cards for visitors each year. Mount Isa brings out the adventurous spirit in everyone, with ample places to fish, camp, four wheel drive, or relax and enjoy an Outback sunset. There are a number of licensed premises, and tourist stopovers.

Mount Isa is approximately 930km West of Townsville, along the Flinders Highway.  Travel time is around 11 hours, plus breaks. The road is prone to flooding during the wet, in the channel country there may be a storm on the horizon, but the floods arrive where you are with no warning.  Hazards whilst driving also include wild pigs, emu's, cattle, horses, mustering motorbikes, sheep, cattle dogs, kangaroo's, road works, drop offs on road shoulders, road trains, train level crossings, pushbike tourists, the actual road itself (potholes, rough edges, shoulder drop offs, narrow road sections), long distance between fuel stops, fuel quality, the extreme temperatures in summer, and other vehicles (in no particular order).

The area surrounding Mt Isa is part of the mineral province; there are many mines that are serviced by Mt Isa, and Cloncurry. The difficulty we encounter with clients is trying to explain the distances between locations, and the travel time involved. Mt Isa and Cloncurry are well serviced by aircraft flights, both small and medium. There are many small aircraft and helicopters available, as well. Some of the larger mines have their own airfields, which accept jets and staff fly in, fly out from larger centres.
