Operating as a Private Investigator (also called a Private Detective, Field Agent) in Australia (Aust., .AU) has some unique challenges.  Although Australians think of themselves as just that, Australians, our governments are rather petty and insist on maintaining State by State licensing. This means that each state government has it's hand out for money to operate in their state (even if this appears to breach to Australian constitution on free trade between states), the general public assumes that a PI licenses is like a drivers license or car registration that covers you whatever state your in; how we wish this were true!
Investigations across state and national borders provide for some other unique challenges. What is accepted in one court jurisdiction is denied in another. What is acceptable behavior in one jurisdiction is corrupt or illegal in another. Private Investigators have to be very careful to comply with local laws, as well as the needs of the client.
Our investigators (also known in some jurisdictions as Private Detectives) are experienced, they will ask questions which border on the pedantic to ensure that the information they obtain is in an acceptable format for presentation in the clients court jurisdiction, that they cover any local idiosyncrasies of a particular court.
For fraud matters the investigation can be expensive and time consuming. We will, at times, advise that it may not be worth the cost however it is ultimately up to the client. If instructed we do proceed in some cases simply on the principle that the client was wronged and wishes to find the offenders. Retribution is as big a driver as restitution where someone has suffered a wrong.
For thefts/frauds sometimes the chase can go through three or four states.  Where property has been onsold, in most Australian jurisdictions, the title has gone to a third party and the property is not considered recoverable - the laws of equity preclude injuring innocent third parties.  It is only possible to take action against the offenders.
For civil matters there are usually strict time limits to be complied with.  You must take action here and now, to protect your interests.
For business dealings there are a number of options to consider, including compliance with ACCC guidelines, Australian consumer legislation and the concept of 'clean hands' when considering your actions.
